Amsterdam’s Golden Age Excusion with Guide Jan
EXCURSION
This guided tour through Amsterdam highlights the important role this city played in history. The first republic of the 7 Provinces, with Amsterdam as the main port and major city, was ruled by 200 wealthy families who lived in luxurious houses on the canals.
During this day-excursion we visit a diamond-cutters workshop to learn how this precious stone is worked and polished. We view portraits of important Amsterdam merchant families in the Rijksmuseum, and see examples of the luxury objects they had made for their residences. We tour the canals past these houses and warehouses, walk along historical locations and admire the interior of the home of a wealthy merchant in museum Van Loon.
Your guide will tell you all about the merits of arts, science and trade, the infrastructure, the stock exchange, the role of politics and religion and the rise of the Republic.
