City Tour Haarlem & Frans Hals Museum
with city guide Jan
Haarlem is a city with over 100,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the province of Noord-Holland. Located on the river Spaarne. The town played an important role in the history of the Republic of Holland. The impressive Sint Bavo Kerk in the center of the city demonstrates the importance and wealth of this city.
The Muller organ in the Sint Bavo Kerk in Haarlem is one of the most famous organs in the world. Soon after its completion, the organ became a tourist attraction of international allure. Händel and 10-year-old Mozart visited Haarlem to play this instrument.
The famous Frans Hals museum in a historic old people’s home accommodates a beautiful collection of paintings. The highlight, of course, being Frans Hals’ loose brushwork: single portraits of urbanites and groupportraits of militia companies.
Haarlem is also home to the oldest museum in the Netherlands, the Teylers Museum, with a special collection of interesting fossils and drawings by Michelangelo and Rembrandt.
In Haarlem we find a local brewery: Jopen Bier. Here beer is brewed following traditional methods, in a former church. There are dozens of types of beer for sale, and we will sample them at the end of the tour.
