The former house of Johan van Nassau Siegen located in The Hague is now the Mauritshuis. A smaller well-arranged museum that is called a gem. The collection of the Mauritshuis is the 2nd largest collection of the Golden Age after the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam.
The Girl with a Pearl Earring and View of Delft by Vermeer can amongst others be enjoyed there. The Girl with a Pearl Earring is not a portrait but an imaginary figure of a young girl. Who it is, is unknown. View of Delft is one of the most famous views of a city in the Golden Age. The French writer Marcel Proust was so impressed by it he let the main character of his book die in front of this painting in the book La recherce du Temps perdu.
The Anatomic Lesson by Professor Tulp by Rembrandt is another masterpiece which is on display in the Mauritshuis. Rembrandt painted the surgeons in action and they are all looking at different things. On the painting you can see an exceptional show lifelike dynamics. Besides there are a number of other portraits by Rembrandt as well as a self-portrait of the master.
There are also masterpieces by other painters on display, such as the Bull of Paulus Potter and works by Rubens, Fabritius Puttertje, Jan Steen, Coorte, Frans Hals and more.
