Van Gogh Museum

Van Gogh Museum tour with Guide Jan Vijftigschild van Tourist Guide Holland.

In this tour you will hear and see a lot about this fascinating painter Van Gogh. You will experience what is so attractive about his work. How van Gogh gave comment on paintings he saw in the Rijksmuseum. “Frans Hals how he did that” was one of his many questions he wrote about in his letters to his brother Theo.

During his short life Vincent van Gogh only sold one of his paintings. All his life he was provided for by his brother Theo.

The Collection

For this reason almost the complete collection stayed in the family Van Gogh. The son of Theo was caretaker of the collection and sold it to the Dutch state for 14 million Euros. The letters Vincent van Gogh wrote to Theo and hundreds of drawings are part of this collection too.

The family had one condition. There had to be a Van Gogh Museum. In the 70-ties it was assumed that the Van Gogh Museum could attract up to 350,000 visitors a year. Meanwhile 1.3 million people visit the Van Gogh Museum every year.

Life

Van Gogh mainly lived in France from 1853 till his death in 1890. He started painting in Nunen in Brabant. Via De Bourinage, England and Antwerp he went to Paris to paint. In the end he settled in the artists’ village of Auvers-sur-Oise outside Paris. Daubigny, Cézanne, Corneille and more also lived in Auvers-sur-Oise. Vincent van Gogh was buried in Auvers-sur-Oise. Later his brother Theo was buried next to him.
