The Netherlands has very many stunning cities and smaller towns. Besides the three big cities, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague there are many cities each with their own charm or sights. Most Dutchmen live close to a town or village. The country is very urbanised as opposed to for example Germany or France.

That is Amsterdam with its 900,000 inhabitants. Rotterdam comes second with 650,000 inhabitants and finally The Hague with 500,000 inhabitants. The Hague is the city of government, Rotterdam the harbour city and Amsterdam the capital.

How large are most of the other cities?

Cities of around 100,000 inhabitants are quite common, such as Haarlem, Delft, Dordrecht, Alkmaar, Middelburg and Breda and many others. All cities with beautiful historic centres, that can be visited on foot and are still very authentic.

Which cities have their own very special history?

Nijmegen and Arnhem due to the Second World War. Nijmegen also because of the Romans and Charles the Great. Utrecht due to the Middle Ages. Zwolle, Kampen, Deventer, Zutphen and Groningen are hanseatic cities. Both Nijmegen and Arnhem are too.
